Police officer training and development
Learning continues after appointment through structured initial training, tutorship, supervised operational development and probation.
Initial learning
New officers complete the learning required to understand policing law, professional standards, communication, safeguarding, investigation, evidence, operational decision making and the duties of the role.
Supervised operational development
Officers develop through supported operational practice, formal reviews and competence assessment. Evidence of development is recorded against the officer’s learning and probation record.
Career development
After initial development, officers can build experience in local policing, investigations and specialist operational roles. Progression depends on the requirements, training and assessment attached to the post.
